allergopedia: the journal of allergens and haptens • Open Access •

Editor-in-chief: Radoslaw Spiewak

Welcome to allergopedia!

We are living in a world where numbers of known sensitizers - allergens and haptens - are on constant rise. As of October 2025, the Allergen Nomenclature database, run under auspices of World Health Organization (WHO) and International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) listed 1147 allergens. Dr Anton de Groot, a Dutch dermatologist who screened medical literature for nearly 4 decades, came to the number of 5200 in 2022. These figures illustrate the sheer number of sensitizers around us. The scientific journal ALLERGOPEDIA was created with the aim of allowing all interested parties - researchers, health care providers and patients to keep up-to-date in this field.

A second, perhaps even more important goal was to create a platform for communication and exchange of ideas between all those interested. I realized the demand for such a platform when looking at the popularity of my Polish-language website, www.alergolog.eu, which had 1.5 million views in 2025. This seemed quite remarkable, considering that fewer than 50 million people worldwide speak Polish. Hence the idea for a similar service in English - a step that would make the information directly accessible to the 1.5 billion English-speakers around the globe. Furthermore, English could possibly be better source language for automatic translations into other languages. Also the choice of a journal format with peer-reviewed short monographs with references seemed a necessary step toward evidence-based medicine.

Inevitably, the founder of a new journal must fill it with content until other authors take notice and are convinced to publish. It's no surprise, then, that almost all the articles in this inaugural issue were written by the editor-in-chief, who, however, firmly believes that this is a temporary situation. I look forward to collaborating with the thriving community of allergists, dermatologists, pulmonologists, rhinologists, gastroenterologists, pediatricians, and all researchers and scientists interested in sensitizers, whether allergens or haptens.

Our journal is wide open to all authors interested in submitting:

  • Short monographs or concise reviews of allergens or haptens.
  • Comprehensive definitions of medical terms related to allergy and sensitization.
  • Reviews or original proposals for systematics and nomenclature of allergens or haptens.
  • Reviews of mechanisms of sensitization to allergens or haptens.

We are looking forward to accepting your valuable contributions in our journal!

Professor Radoslaw Spiewak, dermatologist and allergist
