Allergopedia: The Journal of Allergens, Haptens, and Irritants. An Invitation from the Editor-in-Chief

Welcome to allergopedia!

We are living in a world where the number of known sensitizers – allergens or haptens – and irritants is constantly rising. As of October 2025, the Allergen Nomenclature database, maintained under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS), contained a list of 1,147 allergens, i.e. high molecular weight sensitizers. Dr. Anton de Groot, a Dutch dermatologist who has been analyzing medical literature for nearly four decades has estimated the number of haptens (low molecular weight sensitizers) at over 3,000. These numbers illustrate the vast number of sensitizing factors around us. The number of irritants is more difficult to estimate, as the irritant effect depends on the amount, intensity, or concentration of the factor and individual resistance. Nevertheless, it can be argued that their number also reaches hundreds or even thousands. Some haptens and allergens may also irritate skin at higher concentrations or with repeated exposure.

The scientific journal ALLERGOPEDIA was created with the aim of providing all interested parties, whether researchers, health care providers, or patients with an accessible and reliable source of information in this field. I realized the demand for such a platform when looking at the popularity of the Polish-language website www.alergolog.eu, which had 1.5 million views in 2025. This seemed quite remarkable, considering that fewer than 50 million people worldwide speak Polish. Hence the idea for a similar service in English - a step that would make the information directly accessible to the 1.5 billion English speakers around the globe. Furthermore, English could possibly be a better source language for translations into other languages.

A second important goal was to create a platform for communication and exchange of ideas among all researchers working in these scientific fields. Therefore, the preferred form of communication is a peer-reviewed, short monograph with a bibliography, which seems to be the most effective way to disseminate evidence-based medical information. Inevitably, the founder of a new journal, with the generous help of the members of the Scientific Advisory Board, must fill it with content until other authors notice the new journal and are convinced to publish in it. We firmly believe that this is a temporary situation and are looking forward to collaborating with the thriving community of allergists, dermatologists, toxicologists, pulmonologists, rhinologists, gastroenterologists, pediatricians, and all researchers and scientists interested in sensitizers, whether allergens or haptens, as well as in irritants.

Our journal is open to all authors interested in submitting:

  • Short monographs or concise reviews of haptens, allergens, or irritants.
  • Comprehensive definitions of medical terms related to allergy, sensitization and irritation.
  • Reviews or original proposals for systematics and nomenclature of allergens or haptens.
  • Reviews of mechanisms of sensitization to allergens or haptens.
  • Reviews of mechanisms of irritant effects.

We are looking forward to accepting your valuable contributions in our journal!

Professor Radosław Śpiewak, dermatologist and allergist
